5 reasons you need probiotics after gastric sleeve gastric bypass surgery

In this episode of The Gastric Health Show, we discuss how probiotics positively impact your weight loss after gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery.

The good news for WLS patients is the surgery positively impacts your gut bacteria. And as science is just now discovering. These tiny microbes have a major influence on your weight and your overall health and well-being.

Bacterial balance matters

At no surprise, studies show weight loss surgery patients have a higher ratio of firmicutes to bacteroidetes gut bacteria.  Firmicutes gut bacteria extract more fat and calories from food.  They’re more prevalent in those with chronic disease and obesity  following a low-fiber diet.  Whereas, bacteriodetes gut bacteria are more commonly found in healthy weight individuals.

The “magic” of weight loss surgery

Although we all know WLS is a tool that demands work and change, the surgery does offer a bonus.  Research continues to show firmicutes to bacteroidetes ratio shifts immediately after surgery.   The surgery increases bacteroidetes and lowers firmicutes.  It’s up to you what happens next!

5 things that impact firmicutes to bacteroidetes ratio

Unfortunately, the wrong lifestyle choices over time can easily reverse the positive impacts of both gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery.

  1. Food
  2. Stress
  3. Medication
  4. Exercise
  5. Environment
