In this episode of The Gastric Health Show, we discuss common causes of both heartburn and re-flux after gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery.
What you will learn by listening to this podcast…..
- You will understand why these common side affects are closely associated with the volume of stomach acid produced within your gastrointestinal tract.
- Your new “pouch” produces much less volume of stomach acid compared to your much larger stomach.
- After weight loss surgery, low stomach acid is often the cause of heartburn and re-flux.
- If you are experiencing heartburn or re-flux and have been prescribed a protein pump inhibitor (PPI) medication such as Nexium or Omeprazole. You need to schedule an appointment with your Doctor or Surgeon and ask them to check for Low Stomach acid as the cause of your symptoms.

Where do I find the 5 steps explained in detail of what to do and take to relieve the symptoms of heartburn I am experiencing 1 year after RNY. Where do I get the probiotics and probiotics you talk of. What do I need to do first to elieviate the symptoms!

All of our products can be found in our GHC Store https://gastrichealth.com/gastric-health-club-store/
I think starting with probiotics and digestive enzymes are a great way to change the environment in your gut and improve heartburn. I would also recommend listening to another podcast on heartburn that goes into more detail https://gastrichealth.com/podcast/the-gastric-health-show/episode-034-v2-are-you-suffering-from-heartburn-after-gastric-bypass/
Hope it helps!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I’m 15yrs post RNY WLS. Sadly, my WLS surgery was done in Germany & I’m in the US. After constantly complaining to doctor after doctor; I still hv gas, bloating, IBS, heartburn & alarming rapid weight gain. I’ve even asked how can I hv heartburn & bloating like I’m 9mos pregnant after GBS- esp RNY & no gall bladder? It’s surprising how many drs (GI esp) are still unfamiliar w/ WLS patients & issues thereof. This explains so much! I enjoyed this podcast! Can’t wait to read, listen & get on the road to a healthy recovery.

Thank you for covering this topic! I’m a little over a year post gastric sleeve surgery and experiencing major acid reflux. It’s getting worse. My first episode was this summer after being off omprezole for a few months, the doc put me back on it. But now I’m up to twice a week. It’s so bad that it feels like a heart attack with chest pressure, left shoulder pressure and then it will go away. An episode will last 5 – 40 minutes sometimes. I do work a physically stressful job and sometimes find it hard to eat enough for as active as I am. After listening to your podcast, I believe my symptoms are not GURD, or low acid, but Cebo. I will continue to research as the episodes are unbareable.
