Keto Diet After Gastric Sleeve

Why The Keto Diet After Gastric Sleeve May Be Right For You

Keto Diets have become quite popular within the weight loss surgery community. In fact,

“Would I benefit from a Keto Diet?”

is one of the more common questions I receive when counseling patients. Currently, the keto diet after gastric sleeve is used by patients looking to….

  • Get back on track
  • Jump start weight loss
  • Increase energy
  • Optimize brain function.

Sounds enticing doesn’t it? However, none of us are alike so before you just dive in let’s discuss what a true ketogenic diet looks like, plus the pros and cons to determine if going keto is right for you.

What is the keto diet?

The keto diet is a form of very low-carb, high-fat diet that triggers your body’s natural metabolic process known as ketosis. By consuming minimal carbohydrates, you deprive your body of its favorite fuel source (glucose). This forces your body to burn stored fat for fuel instead.

When stored fat is broken down by your liver, it produces ketones which are a type of fatty acid. These ketones are then sent out into your bloodstream where your muscles and other tissues use them as fuel.

Health benefits of the keto diet after gastric sleeve surgery

There is solid evidence the keto diet improves the following:

  • Insulin Sensitivity – making it ideal for weight loss surgery patients concerned with type 2 diabetes. In fact, a University of Michigan study found eating 3 low-carb meals within 24 hours reduced insulin resistance by more than 30%.
  •  Improves Alzheimers, Parkinson, Multiple Sclerosis, and Stroke – There are several studies out showing the Keto diet benefits several brain related illnesses
  • Reduces Cancer Tumor Growth – a 1987 study shows the ketogenic diet resulted in reduced cancer tumor growth. Several follow-up studies have shown that depriving your body of glucose by adopting a very low to no carb0hydrate diet. You essentially starve cancer cells which feed off of glucose.
  • Increased Weight Loss – Of course, the main reason the Keto diet after gastric sleeve surgery is so popular is due to the undeniable fact the diet improves weight loss

Legitimate health concerns regarding the keto diet

Those weight loss surgery patients who have the following complications or issues may want to avoid the keto diet. These include:

  • Thyroid Dysfunction – This is one reason why men tend to do better on the Keto diet as opposed to women
  • Peri-menopause – The Keto diet puts your hormones out of balance which has differing results for peri-menopause women
  • Blood Sugar Issues – Those who struggle when their blood sugar drops will not do well on the keto diet
  • Adrenal Dysfunction/Fatigue – Those who struggle with adrenal fatigue issues will need to address their stress related problems before going on the Keto diet
  • No gallbladder – As a weight loss surgery patient, if you have had your gall bladder removed. You definitely will want to start taking digestive enzymes (ox bile) before going on the keto diet
  • Liver Dysfunction – If you suffer from liver damage or liver dysfunction. You may need to supplement with milk thistle, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), or N-acetyl cysteine to support liver function before going on the Keto diet

Plus, the loss of 4 pounds was an added bonus. Looking back I realize I was not eating the right foods therefore I was having low blood sugars. I have a whole new way of thinking when it comes to eating thanks to the Gastric Health Club and to you Dawn! Thanks!!
