Are You Struggling With Emotional Eating?

Emotional eating can be a very complex topic.  Whenever food is consistently used to cope with life you have to question what drives it.

In this episode I interview Dena Norton, MS, RD a functional nutrition expert.  Dena and I also discussed the “Sabotaging effects of stress” in Episode 043, but we dove a little deeper and discussed the physiological and biological causes of stress that impact emotional eating.

Relationship with food

First off, you can’t ignore your connection to food.  For example, having a poor relationship with food will make you less resilient in stressful situations.

Stress hormones

Secondly, stress hormones have the ability to increase cravings for carby, salty, sugary snacks.  Anytime your stress level consistently rises, combined with a poor relationship with food you may find yourself white knuckling the pantry door or fridge.

Neurotransmitters & amino acids

Lastly, you have millions of biochemical reactions occurring every second in your body.  When you’re low or deficient in serotonin, dopamine, glutamine or other neurotransmitters and amino acids you will struggle with an uncontrollable urge to eat.  Even if you’re not hungry!

As they say, leave no stone unturned.  Listen in for all the nuggets.

If you’re struggling with emotional eating

Are you an emotional eater?  Have you explored stress hormones, neurotransmitters & amino acids contributing to your emotional eating?  I would consider working with a functional nutrition professional to get to the root cause and leave no stone unturned.
