The seven causes of cravings #2 – Unbalanced Blood Sugar

Cravings can be a sign that your body is out of balance.  Therefore, when you are struggling with cravings for sugar, carbs, salty, crunchy foods you may want to think about unbalanced blood sugars.

Unbalanced blood sugars

Glucose is the primary sugar in the bloodstream.  For example, when we eat carbohydrates and it turns it into sugar, which then gets turned into energy.  Our body has checks and balances to make it all work

There are three hormones responsible for converting sugar into fuel.

  • Insulin
  • Glucagon
  • Cortisol

Insulin

Our blood sugar naturally rises after eating.   Our pancreas secretes insulin, when it recognizes that there is sugar in the blood.  Then insulin’s job is to take sugar out of the bloodstream and shove it into the cells.

Glucagon

Glucagon is responsible for signaling the body to stop storing sugar and use it for fuel.

Cortisol

Cortisol is our stress hormone, but it is also responsible for boosting your blood sugar when it gets too low.

Unfortunately being under chronic stress creates problems with this mechanism.  If someone is experiencing symptoms of a low blood sugar, it may be a cortisol issue instead.

If you are experiencing:

  • fatigue
  • irritability
  • shakiness
  • cravings
  • lightheadedness
  • headaches
  • brain fog
  • weight changes

You may want to consider unbalanced blood sugars.
