The seven causes of cravings #6

Cravings can be a sign that your body is out of balance.  When you are struggling with cravings for sugar, carbs, salty, crunchy foods you may want to think about unbalanced hormones.

Unbalanced hormones

Ghrelin and leptin are frequently referred to for appetite regulation.  Although valuable information, exploring neurotransmitters and sex hormones can provide powerful insight too.

Dopamine & serotonin

The neurotransmitters we are referring to are dopamine and serotonin.  Dopamine is our reward hormone.  Serotonin is our happy hormone.

A low dopamine needs constant reinforcement.  You may experience symptoms such as:

  • flat mood
  • depression
  • bored
  • poor energy
  • decreased drive
  • lack of motivation
  • low enthusiasm
  • difficulty concentrating
  • easily gain weight
  • need more coffee or sugar to make it through the day

Low serotonin may present with symptoms such as:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • panicky
  • can’t sleep
  • migraines
  • PMS
  • IBS
  • Obesity

Estrogen & progesterone

A study in the Journal of Psychology, Physiology & Behavior 2016 found that high estrogen during the luteal phase(ovulation to menstruation=14 days) will increase cravings for sweet tasting food and carbs.

Don’t dismiss chronic cravings for lack of willpower!  Your body is trying to tell you something is out of balance.
